[webmaster note]: Thanks to Bill, KE5OG, for pulling me out of the fire. I was supposed to do net control duty and literally at the last minute, my swr went skyrocketing. It took a reset of my 756, but I didn't think of that until after the net. Still scratching my head over that one.

KE5TN Dave, from El Paso, moved up here some time back, they finally purchased a place and Dave hopes to have an HF antenna soon so he may return to the net soon. I have breakfast with Dave each week and have been to his home a few times, he wants to get active on HF again and wants to return to checking into ELP Chapter QCWA net on 3933 each Saturday at 8:30 Mountain time as well as the BBEN. I check into this net each week mobile on the way into Ruidoso. Any of you 25+ year hams might think about QCWA and checking in on Saturday's, this is the closest Chapter net on HF that I know of.

Very dry winter first one here without snow since 97, the week after this net we had cold WX and some light moisture turning into snow Saturday, very dry still, least amount of snow in many years at ski resort, almost 90% manmade this year so far, but they are open and should be until normal shut down time. Due to this we expect a very bad fire season this year, unless we get some large late snow here next 90 days. We will start our preparations and training in February for our ARES / RACES team.

Last Sunday in Dec. 2003 we had a power failure that lasted from five to twelve hours here in Lincoln County. We only have a single power line feed to the county from Alamogordo, very similar to what we had in Brewster county some years back. When we love that single feed we lose all commercial power in the county. We activated an ARES net that ran until power was restored, our battery power back up repeater that became our primary repeater in November due to a wind storm worked great we had close to 20 stations active during the event. This showed our hams had great capability to operate without commercial power under tactical conditions. None of the local radio broadcast stations had emergency power so there was no local information available to the people in the county during this event.

At our house my back up generator had a clogged fuel line and we operated on our solar battery system for our radios, but we could not operate our central heat, outside temps dropped to 10 degrees inside dropped to 54 between 19:00 and 04:10 when the juice came back on.

We found that our land line and cellular systems failed around six hours into the event, so ham radio was very useful. A shelter was set up on Ruidoso and we set had two hams at the shelter with others at the 911 Dispatch, nursing home, Red Cross and some other areas. When the shelter needed gasoline for their generators during the event we found that some non Amateurs were monitoring our ham repeater when we requested gasoline and twenty five gallons showed up at the shelter before any of our hams could respond. Two years ago, when the club voted to set up a full redundant back up repeater instead of adding batteries to the primary repeater turned out to be a great move. During a major wind storm in November, our primary repeater tower failed and fell comepletly removing that repeater from service, our back repeater guy wire broke but that tower fell over into a tree and was at 40 Degrees. We were able to use a come-along and my Jeep to pull it back up and re-set the guy wire prior to that repeater failing. The back up is only about two miles from the primary site so the two sites have very similar radio coverage. I had built up a GE Master II unit for the club as a back up repeater radio when we first moved here and the back up site we were using for a remote base site so we had the tower and antennas up there. For us too set up a 100% back up system only required a set of duplexers, some batteries and a charging system to get operational. That back up has worked great for us this last two years, we turned it on once a week to insure it was working and every time we lost power it worked great, there is a lot to be said for 100% redundancy. For us in November it made the difference of being on the air and operating as if nothing happened. Some of the local hams did not get the word and just a few days ago asked why they heard the Emergency Repeater ID running, they did not even know we had lost our primary system.

The loss of radio broadcast, cellular and land line telephone systems showed that there is a weak link in communications here. I plan to bring this up at the next LEPC meeting here.

08/10/2003 K5RIC 28   42 N5ABV and K5RIC ran a test using Echo Link to see if any stations wanted to check in via Echo Link. We had John AE5B WTX SM, Ed N5ABV, Rick K5RIC,Bill N5POB linked in via Echo Link, Ray N5SR checked with new HF antenna and will try echo link next week. Next week I may try an interface between my HF radio and echo link to see how well that works. AE5B and AB5BY talked via a KISS echo link crossover but the HF noise made for hard copy. If you have echo link try connecting to Ed N5ABV 120514 next week just before the net opens. I must use dial up so I can only make one link and that will be to Ed's node, as he can support 7 other links. At other times when I have my echo link station on, I can be reached at 125232 come by. If you are out traveling and have a lap top and I net connection, check in via Ed's node as a user or from a link by just dialing up his node ID. John AB5BY stated that the next Big Bend ARC meeting they will show the ARRL video about Broadband on Power Line. Band cond. Strange as many stations were strong but many that normally are were not.
