September Meeting Draft Minutes
The September 13th meeting minutes are ready. Here is the link to the document. The October 11th meeting will take any changes and corrections before accepting the minutes.
CycleFest September 17th
Jim KD5KBU is net control and BBARC organizer for CycleFest. This was Jim’s last time to be net control for CycleFest, a position he filled for 20 years. Charlie N5CET was with Jim this year to learn how to run CycleFest net control. Many thanks to the BBARC volunteers this year – Gordo K5CLO at stations 1 & 2, Marvin KG5LMG at station 3, Rob KE5KNQ at station 5, Art K7VEN at station 8, Brad KI5OQB and Sharon KI5EXR at station 9, and Lonny K5LON at station 10. An overnight closure of I10 at Kent routed traffic through the course but was resolved before CycleFest began. A semitruck broke down on 166 blocking a lane during CycleFest. HTs continued to have difficulty reaching the repeaters.
DEM Exercise September 23rd
The exercise was a success. Thanks to all 16 stations that participated.
Alpine Lions Club BBARC Presentation
The Alpine Lions Club had a presentation about the BBARC at their meeting September 20th. The focus was on what is ham radio, what is the BBARC, and what are the 2m repeaters operated by the BBARC. At least four lions are interested in a ham license. The presentation was by Lion Scott KI5ANQ using the Field Day slide show.
New Meeting and Exams Location Starting November
BBARC meetings and exams are moving to a new venue and time in November. The new time is 7:00pm for meetings and 6:00 for exams. The new venue is the Masons Building on Highway 118 towards Fort Davis on the north side of Alpine (2300 Highway 118 North). Here is a map and picture of the building.
Please note this is not the Mason’s Building downtown that google only mentions. Use the address to search maps, not the name.
Santa Net Set for December 14th 5pm to 7pm
Santa Net is a longstanding club tradition of getting kids on the air and talking to Santa at the north pole. Actually, Santa is just a club member at home or in the hardware store on the 2m repeaters, but that is a Santa secret.
Santa Net introduces kids to ham radio. Not many kids have a family member or neighbor to have first contact with ham radio, so Santa Net is important and needs the support of club members. Like Field Day, newspapers, radio, fliers, and other promotions are needed for Santa Net. We are working on sandwich board signs to place at 5th & Holland and 5th & Avenue E intersections.
The event needs members to prepare the RV with holiday lights and manage the line waiting to enter the RV and explain what is happening. Here is a signup list to help. The RV is parked at the front of the hardware store. We will put Christmas lights and decorations on the RV to make it more obvious. The word really needs to get out to elementary school, child care, kindergarten, and other institutions with the primary customers – kids!
FCC ULS New Log In
With the FCC going to email only communications, each member should log into the FCC ULS web site and review their record, particularly email address and license expiration.
The CORES system is now invalid but is still up and active. Use the new system.
BBARC Field Day in the Alpine Avalanche
The June 30th Alpine Avalanche has this picture about Field Day taken by newspaper editor Gail Yovanovich. We see Lonny K5LON, Charlie N5CET, Art K7VEN, and John KI5SNZ installing the GOTA station antenna. Gail Yovanovich visited the Field Day site Friday and Saturday. The Avalanche also carried an article on Field Day June 23rd, earning 100 Field Day points. Thank you Gail for supporting the BBARC. Gail had a license long ago and looking to renew this fall.
The new technician manual is available from the ARRL bookstore as the question pool changed July 1st.
The BBARC has exam sessions an hour before the monthly meeting – 2nd Tuesday at 6:30pm at the American Legion Hall October 11th, and 6:00pm at the Masons Building, 2300 Highway 118 N Alpine TX starting November 8th.
Next BBARC Meeting is October 11th
Time is 7:30pm and location is the American Legion Hall, 306 W Sul Ross Avenue in Alpine.
License exams will be at 6:30pm before the meeting at the same location.
